A Cap-Pele, N.B., man has been sentenced in connection with an investigation into sexual offences against a child. The New Brunswick RCMP began an investigation in April 2023 after receiving information from the Sûreté du Québec - Internet Child Sexual Exploitation Investigations Unit. The RCMP learned a male located in New Brunswick was suspected of making arrangements online with another adult to commit a sexual offence against someone he believed to be a child. Officers executed a search warrant at a residence in Cap-Pele on June 21, 2023, and seized several electronic devices. A 58-year-old man was arrested at the scene and then released on strict conditions pending a future court appearance. Rene Godin appeared in Moncton provincial court on Aug. 12, 2024, and was charged with making arrangements to commit a sexual offence against a child and making child sexual abuse and exploitation material. Godin pleaded guilty to the charges on Jan. 6 and was sentenced to 24 months in prison on Thursday. He was also ordered to register with the National Sex Offender Registry and to provide a DNA sample. “Following his release from prison, he will have to abide by conditions set out by the court,” reads a news release from the New Brunswick RCMP.
