Two people have been sentenced in relation to a drug trafficking investigation in Moncton, N.B., after over a kilogram of fentanyl was seized between them, according to police. Codiac police teams started two separate investigations into illegal drug trafficking in Moncton on April 14. As the investigation went on, officers determined the people involved were connected. Police executed a search warrant at a home on Main Street on May 7. They reportedly seized around 550 grams of fentanyl, methamphetamine, illegal cigarettes, drug paraphernalia and cash. A 58-year-old woman was arrested at the scene. The next day police executed a search warrant at a home on Leopold F. Belliveau Drive. The RCMP says officers seized drug paraphernalia and cash. A 28-year-old woman, a 24-year-old woman, and a 39-year-old woman were arrested and 527 grams of fentanyl were seized. The 24-year-old and 39-year-old were later released. Catherine Joy Cook, 58, and Jessie-Lynn Fillmore, 28, were both charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl, for which they both later pleaded guilty. Cook was sentenced to seven years, 10 months and seven days in prison on June 10. She also received a 10-year weapons prohibition order and was ordered to provide a DNA sample. Fillmore was sentenced to eight years in prison on July 28 and also received a 10-year weapons prohibition order and provided a DNA sample. “Fentanyl continues to have devastating impacts on individuals, families and communities across the province,” Staff Sgt. Joel Arsenault of the Codiac Regional RCMP says in a news release. “This seizure and the significant sentences imposed reflect the seriousness of these offences and our ongoing commitment to protecting the public by targeting those responsible for trafficking these dangerous substances.” For more New Brunswick news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
