How much gas went up over the weekend in the Maritimes

The high cost of gas is affecting Maritime businesses.

There were increases at the pumps for all three Maritime provinces over the weekend. Here’s a look at current prices as of Monday morning.

Nova Scotia

The price of gas and diesel increased in Nova Scotia Saturday.

The Nova Scotia Energy Board used the interrupter clause to change the price of all grades of gasoline and diesel due to “significant shifts in the market prices.”

The price of regular self-serve gasoline in the Halifax area increased by 6.7 cents per litre. The minimum price is now 168.7 cents per litre.

The price of diesel increased by 8.9 cents per litre to a new minimum price of 220.0 cents per litre.

In Cape Breton, the minimum price of regular self-serve gasoline is 170.6 cents per litre. The minimum price of diesel on the island is now 221.9 cents per litre.

Prince Edward Island

The Prince Edward Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission approved an increase in gas prices, which went into effect Sunday.

The price of regular gasoline increased by 10.9 cents. The new minimum price is 180.3 cents per litre.

Diesel prices increased by 13.2 cents. The minimum price is now 232.2 cents per litre.

New Brunswick

There was also an unscheduled adjustment in prices at the pumps in New Brunswick on Saturday.

The price of regular self-serve gasoline increased by 6.5 cents per litre to a new maximum price of 169.8 cents per litre.

The price of diesel increased by 7.9 cents. The new maximum price is 224.3 cents per litre.

‘A wait and see approach’

Dan McTeague, the president of Canadians for Affordable Energy, says gasoline prices have increased about 20 cents a litre across the Maritimes since Feb. 27.

“Right across the country there has been a rather dramatic increase which doesn’t seem to be halting, although I would think that by Wednesday this week things could drop a tiny bit as they did last Thursday maybe a penny for gasoline and 3 or 4 cents for diesel,” said McTeague.

“But markets are taking a wait and see approach to what is probably the most significant crisis as far as energy supply since 1973.”
