DELTA, B.C. - Steve Fonyo, the one-legged man who ran across Canada to raise money for cancer research 25 years ago, has been arrested in Delta, B.C. on fraud charges.

Police say the 45-year-old Fonyo was arrested Thursday after someone used an authorized credit card three times to buy gas.

Delta police say the arrest was part of an ongoing investigation of the production and use of fraudulent credit cards.

Police say between September 2009 and July 2010, more than $60,000 worth of fraudulent purchases made at Delta gas station and the investigation has led to fraud charges against several other people.

Fonyo was still a teenager in 1985 when he completed a cross-Canada run that raised $14 million for cancer research, but he was stripped of his Order of Canada earlier this year for earlier criminal convictions ranging from assault to drunk driving.

Last month, Fonyo announced he will marry his fiancee Aug. 28 on a Victoria beach and he invited the entire community to attend.
