A Nova Scotia man was surprised and delighted when Pittsburgh Penguins’ star Sidney Crosby dropped by his house to fulfill a request he’d made on a handmade roadside sign.

Darryl Pottie had created the sign with a jersey affixed and a message directed at the two-time Stanley Cup winner: “Sid please sign my jersey.” The sign stayed up for about a month, while Crosby was in his hometown of Cole Harbour, N.S. for his day with the Stanley Cup and week-long hockey camp.

According to Pottie, he had a lot of hope that Crosby would stop by and sign the jersey because he had heard the NHL star was not only a great guy, but he sometimes travelled through the area.

“After so much time went by and I took the sign down, I never thought he would pop in after that,” Pottie told CTV News.

But last Friday, Pottie was sitting in his cubicle at work when he got an email from his wife saying, “Look who popped in!” Along with the message was an attached picture of his daughter and Sidney Crosby standing in his living room.

“I said to myself, ‘That looks like Sidney, that’s Sidney Crosby! Where did my daughter get a picture with Sidney Crosby?’” said Pottie. “Then I went, ‘Oh my gosh that’s my living room! He’s in my house!’”

According to Pottie, at first he regretted not being at home himself to open the door for Crosby, as he had been at home on vacation the week prior, but after seeing his multiple signed jerseys he found it hard to regret anything.

“It’s so amazing and just speaks volumes to the kind of person that Sidney Crosby is and now I have a great story,” said Pottie.

Pottie returned home to find two signed Team Canada jersey as well as a signed authentic Pittsburgh Penguins on-ice game jersey, both of which he plans to frame in protective window boxes.

“I’m going to guard them with laser beams and Rottweilers so nobody can get close to touching them,” laughed Pottie.
