OTTAWA -- Happy International Workers Day. Federal government employees will be out celebrating the event today, also known as May Day.
Local activists, community organizations, labour unions, and advocacy groups, meanwhile, will stage a protest to challenge recent cuts to public services.
They say they're fighting back against what they consider attacks on workers made by the federal, provincial and city governments.
Also on the subject of public service cuts, CBC CEO Hubert Lacroix will appear at the Commons official languages committee to discuss programming changes at the public broadcaster following recent budget cuts. Details of an estimated 600 job cuts were announced to CBC employees on Wednesday.
Here are some other events taking place in Ottawa:
- Recreational vehicle dealers and the Canadian Camping and RV Council will hold a news conference to urge the government to address critical infrastructure needs in Canada;
- The Supreme Court of Canada will issue a decision in the appeal of Marilyne Dionne against the Commission scolaire des Patriotes et Autre. The high court will also render decisions in a number of leave to appeal applications;
- On Wednesday, PETA erected a giant inflatable toilet on Parliament Hill to protest the seal hunt. Today, the Council of Canadians will stage a mock wastewater spill using a 14-foot fracking rig in a demonstration against fracking for natural gas extraction;
- Dr. Hedy Fry will talk about her private member's bill calling for a National Metastatic Breast Cancer Day on Oct. 13;
- Sen. Asha Seth will host parliamentarians and members of the blind and partially sighted community to launch the first national Vision Health Month.
