It’s always Happy Hour somewhere, and that somewhere will soon be 24 Sussex Dr., now that U.S. President Barack Obama has made good on his Olympic hockey-related bet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The leaders actually made two bets: on the women’s hockey final and the men’s semi-final, both of which had their two countries going head-to-head. Cases of beer were on the line.

The Canadian women won Olympic gold in a stunning overtime comeback win, and the next day Canada crushed the U.S. in the men’s semi-final.

But although those victories took place at the Sochi Olympics more than two weeks ago, Obama had yet to pay up. But after Harper gently prodded the U.S. president in a radio interview last week – “I haven’t received it yet, but in fairness to President Obama he’s lost bets to me before and he’s always paid up before” -- two cases of beer arrived Monday at the Canadian embassy in Washington.

Perhaps given the potential for an international incident, it was the National Security Council that ensured the prime minister got his official White House brew.

On Monday afternoon, the NSC’s press office tweeted:

To which the embassy replied:

Later, the prime minister, in South Korea to sign a free trade deal, tweeted his thanks:

Obama sent Harper a case each of the White House Honey Ale and Honey Porter. The Honey Ale is believed to be the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds, according to the official White House blog, which also has the recipes for home brewers not lucky enough to win bets against the president.
