EDMONTON - The federal government is giving $69 million to improve public transit, sewer and drinking water in the Northwest Territories.

Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi made the announcement Tuesday in Edmonton.

Some of the projects the money will go towards are upgrading Fort Simpson's water, sewer and storm water drainage system.

In Yellowknife, public transit upgrades will include the construction of accessible bus stops, sidewalks, wheelchair ramps, curb drops and bus pull-out areas to improve safety and accessibility for all commuters.

The money is coming from two new federal programs -- the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund and the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund.

The federal government is providing up to 75 per cent of funding, while the territorial government and communities will provide the rest.
