FREDERICTON -- Premier David Alward is emphasizing the importance of investing in New Brunswick's energy sector in campaigning for the Sept. 22 provincial election.

The Progressive Conservative Party is forecasting more jobs and close to $200 million in short-term tax and royalty revenue through shale gas development.

Elsewhere on the campaign trail, the Liberals are promising improved environmental oversight in response to years of increasingly extreme weather in the province.

Party leader Brian Gallant says a Liberal government would ensure New Brunswick is better prepared to weather the effects of natural disasters through more tree trimming, improved public communication and timely post-event reviews.

NDP Leader Dominic Cardy says as premier he would simplify the process for food and product licencing and inspection through a New Brunswick Market Ready Program.

Cardy says he would also help farmers immediately by reducing the cost of plates for farm vehicles to $10 annually.
