HALIFAX - The chairman of the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board says any examination of the $6.2-billion Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project would only focus on the subsea link between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.

Peter Gurnham says that's because the board is only authorized to look at projects submitted by utilities it regulates, and in this case that would likely be Nova Scotia Power.

Gurnham says the private utility company hasn't made an application yet before the board, and he has no indication of when or if that will happen.

But Gurnham says the board has begun discussions with consultants who would assist it if an application for the project is brought forward.

Gurnham made the comments in an appearance today before the legislature's public accounts committee.

Committee Liberal member Andrew Younger says Gurnham's comments should raise concerns because if the project is built by an entity other than Nova Scotia Power, the board would not get a chance to scrutinize it as Premier Darrell Dexter has said it would.
