CALGARY - The crew of the Calgary police helicopter was momentarily blinded when someone aimed at laser pointer at their aircraft.

The incident happened Monday while the helicopter was being used to assist officers on the ground in the city's northeast.

As a precaution, officials at Calgary's airport temporarily closed one runway to prevent commercial aircraft from being targeted with the beam.

Police were able to determine where the laser beam was coming from and arrested one person, but charges have not been laid.

In June, an Edmonton-area man was found guilty of creating a hazard to aviation after he accidentally pointed a laser beam at a police helicopter.

Court heard that Alvin Bautista, who will be sentenced next month, shone his son's laser at tree leaves to see why it wasn't working properly.
