Avid cruisers have named St. Petersburg, Russia, the best cruise destination in the world for 2016.

In Cruise Critic's first cruise destination awards, the imperial Russian city took the top spot, with visitors enamoured by its art, history and architecture.

The awards are based on consumer ratings submitted with reviews on the site.

Paris was rated the best river cruise destination, while San Francisco took the title of best cruise destination in North America.
