MONCTON, N.B. -- The University of Moncton says it is compiling a list of students, teachers and other staff who may have been in contact with a student who has a highly contagious form of tuberculosis.
The university confirmed Tuesday the infected patient is a student in the business faculty at the New Brunswick university's campus in the city.
Hospital officials at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre said earlier this week the patient was suffering from laryngeal tuberculosis and had been admitted to the hospital on Sept. 10.
The diagnosis was confirmed on Sept. 17, and isolation measures were taken.
The university said Tuesday in a news release that health professionals will go to the classes the student attended to answer questions.
The release also says the university is confident only those who were in close contact with the student are at risk of infection.
New Brunswick usually sees between five and 12 cases of tuberculosis a year, but the district medical health officer issued the public notice in this case because it is a more contagious form of the disease.
