Health Canada has issued a recall for a stacking cube toy due to a risk of choking in toddlers.

The Imaginarium 19-piece Safari Stacking Cubes set includes laminated cardboard cubes that can pose a danger if torn apart and eaten, according to the recall notice issued by the agency.

"Pieces of laminated paper can be torn off the cardboard cubes, posing a choking hazard to young children," said the recall.

The toy is comprised of 10 laminated cardboard cubes and nine wooden blocks in a variety of shapes. The cubes stack one metre high and have five activity sides that help teach kids to count, solve puzzle problems and sort shapes and animals.

The toy is sold at Toys "R" Us and an estimated 3,380 units of the recalled toy were sold at stores in Canada from August 2014 to April 2016.

"Consumers should immediately take the recalled toy away from children and return it to the nearest Toys“R”Us store to receive a refund or store credit," states the recall.

The product is manufactured in China by Top Bright Animation.
