A medical marijuana shop in Victoria, B.C., has a new way to supply its patrons with pot: A self-serve vending machine.

The BC Pain Society says its cash-only machine carries a variety of marijuana, and takes cannabis dispensing to the next level in terms of convenience, security and integrity of the product.

“Between the time it’s packaged and the time it’s dispensed and opened by the purchaser, nobody has contact with it,” said Bill Negraeff of the BC Pain Society.

“This is a business that deals a lot in cash, and so the vending machine accepts cash and it’s a secure repository during the day for cash.”

Vending machine shoppers are subject to the same rules as other shop patrons, which means that they must have a doctor’s prescription, a federal government-issued card or a dispensary membership, along with photo ID.
