A long time ago at an Ottawa cinema far, far away, an 11-year-old Justin Trudeau told a broadcast reporter that his favourite "Star Wars" movie was "Return of the Jedi."
That’s a controversial choice, unless you like Ewoks.
The 1983 interview recently came back to haunt Trudeau when it resurfaced online, and he took to social media to settle the matter.
“There's been some confusion in the media over which Star Wars film is my favourite,” Trudeau wrote Monday in a Facebook post.
Trudeau linked to an interview he gave at Ottawa Comiccon earlier this year, where he clarifies that "The Empire Strikes Back" “is the best.”
“This clip from May 2015 should put the controversy to rest,” he wrote.
“When I was a child, I spoke as a child! But Empire Strikes Back is my true number 1,” he wrote.
In the Comicon clip, Trudeau said how “extraordinary” it was for him to meet Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca in the films.
“I told him I’m going to get the kids to watch Empire sometime soon,” Trudeau said.
“We made it through a new hope and now we’re moving onto Empire,” he added. “Empire is the best.”
Although the prime minister says "Empire" is now his favourite, movie critics mostly believe that the first "Star Wars" film was the best, according to data compiled by the website Metacritic.com.
Critics gave the original "Star Wars" an average score of 92 out of 100, while "The Empire Strikes Back" got an average score of 72, and "Return of the Jedi" averaged 52.
