A 21-year old suspect is in custody after a violent crime spree in the Montreal area that involved a deadly carjacking and a man being shot through the doors of his own home.

Police also linked the same suspect to the death of a young man whose body was found in a Montreal apartment.

Police say a 49-year-old woman was shot at a gas station in the eastern part of the city around 11 p.m. Sunday before a man took her car and sped off. The woman, who was apparently waiting to pick up her daughter from work, later died of her injuries.

Police say the suspect crashed the woman’s car shortly after the shooting and then walked up to a home on Normandy Street in Montreal. The suspect allegedly demanded the homeowner’s keys before shooting the man through the door. The 64-year-old man was able to call 911 as the suspect fled in his car. The homeowner suffered non-life threatening injuries.

After the second shooting, the suspect led officers on a chase throughout the Montreal area.  Police say the suspect drove at high speeds along the city roads and highways before crashing into a ditch.

When police caught up with the car, it was abandoned. But officers quickly spotted the suspect on foot and chased him down. The man was arrested by Longueuil police in a nearby parking lot. The suspect is now in custody and under questioning, police say.

Later on Monday, police said they were able to establish a link between the suspect and the discovery of the body of a man in his 20s in an east-end apartment earlier Sunday evening.

Police said charges could be laid against the suspect on Tuesday.
