A 20-hour armed standoff that left one officer injured was brought to a dramatic end Wednesday, after Montreal police stormed the home of an elderly man who had barricaded himself inside.

Police said officers rushed the home in Montreal's Cote-Saint-Luc neighbourhood at approximately 8 a.m., and arrested a 72-year-old man.

The incident began almost 24 hours earlier, when hydro workers attempting to change a meter reported they had been threatened by a man with a firearm.

Police responded, but the man barricaded himself inside the home.

At least one gunshot was fired towards police during the standoff, according to a Montreal police spokesperson, leaving one officer with a minor injury.

A written statement from police described the injury as a "bruise" on the foot.

Police blocked off several streets as they attempted to resolve the incident peacefully.

Officials tried to communicate with the man via a megaphone, and had one of the man’s family members try to speak to him, but eventually police turned to more aggressive tactics.

Overnight, police broke windows and threw tear gas grenades inside, and on Wednesday morning provincial police used an armoured car to remove the home's front door.

Police fired two rubber bullets that struck the man.

"Our SWAT member went into the house and proceeded to arrest the man," Const. Daniel Lacoursiere said.

The man was later transported to hospital.

Neighbours described the man to CTV Montreal as aggressive and anti-social, and said he had been threatening in the past.

"He has an illness and everyone is just scared of him to point it out," neighbour Avy Ohayon said. "So things like this have to happen for them to open their eyes. It's sad."

Police have not said what charges the man faces.
