Environment Canada has lifted several tornado warnings issued for southern Alberta on Wednesday.

However, severe thunderstorm warnings remain in place for numerous regions across the province.

Strong winds, large hail and intense rainfall could potentially result from the storms.

Tornado warnings that were in place earlier Wednesday for the towns of Three Hills, Drumheller, Vulcan and Strathmore, as well as the city of Brooks, have been lifted.

A storm spotter reportedly saw a tornado northeast of Langdon, Alta., which is about 36 kilometres southeast of Calgary.

Environment Canada says that it received no other reports of funnel clouds and the thunderstorms have "weakened slightly."

Severe weather has already brought hail, strong winds and intense rain to Calgary and the surrounding areas, cutting electricity to thousands and flooding some city streets.

Trees were torn from their roots, power lines were toppled and as many as 35,000 customers lost electricity when the storm struck Tuesday evening, according to Enmax spokesperson Doris Kaufmann-Woodcock.

One woman told CTV Calgary she called 911 when her car became submerged up to the headlights in an underpass.

"I'm actually scared of water because I can't swim," she said, adding that a 911 operator told her to climb onto the roof and wait for help.

In some spots, the hail was so heavy it looked like knee-deep snow piled on the ground.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the city at about 5:35 p.m. The warning was downgraded to a watch at 8:12 p.m.

CTV Calgary Weather Specialist Steve Rothfels said two storms passed through the area dumping heavy rain and hail the size of quarters.

Calgary Emergency Management Agency deputy chief Sue Henry said the biggest issue they found was catch basins backing up because of the deluge of hail combined with leaves blown from trees.

Henry said the number of calls to 911 were six times the normal volume.

Police said they received a call about severe gusts ripping the roof off an apartment complex in the city’s northeast. They also warned that flash flooding had closed several underpasses, and advised drivers to find alternate routes.

Calgary Transit experienced delays on all lines due to hail and water on the tracks.

Dozens of flights at the Calgary International Airport were cancelled or delayed as a result of the hour-long storm.

There were no reports of injuries.

Calgary's Wednesday forecast is expected to bring scattered thunderstorms by mid-morning and a high of 22 C.
