It was a happy homecoming for a Vancouver pooch and his owner, who were separated after a vehicle was stolen with the St. Bernard left sitting in the back.

The three-year-old mountain dog – named Tzou – was sitting in the back of its owner’s late-model Dodge pickup truck in Vancouver’s Chinatown on Thursday when the truck was stolen, the keys still sitting in the ignition.

Kristyn Christiansen, the owner of the dog and truck, said he stopped to make a quick cash stop at the Scotiabank when someone slipped into the pickup truck and drove off.

“I literally had just crossed the street and it was gone,” Christiansen told CTV Vancouver News.

The pickup truck was later found abandoned in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood, bereft of any gas. The truck’s stereo was removed and some tools and a computer were also stolen. But more importantly, Christiansen’s beloved Tzou was no where to be found.

Christiansen made a public plea to have his giant, 160-pound dog returned, saying he cared more about Tzou than the pickup truck. Christiansen said he’s owned the dog since he was a puppy and Tzou is like a child to him.

“He would follow anybody and trust anybody because he’s very innocent,” Christiansen said, as he described Tzou.

After several sightings on Friday, Tzou continued wandering the streets of Vancouver until an anonymous citizen brought the dog to the Vancouver Police Department, where the grateful owner and dog were happily reunited.
