VICTORIA -- The union representing Victoria police officers says it has no confidence in Chief Frank Elsner's ability to lead the department after an internal probe into his conduct.
The chief issued a statement earlier this week saying he was sorry and humiliated after exchanging direct messages with a woman on Twitter.
The Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board gave its full support for Elsner's leadership after findings of an investigation by an independent lawyer were presented to the board last week.
But union spokesman Sgt. Glen Shiels says that when the chief admits to contacting a fellow officer's wife, that's a betrayal and breach of trust his members will find hard to forgive.
The union wants the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner to order an independent public trust investigation into the matter, saying the B.C. Police Act should apply equally to all members, regardless of rank.
The police complaint commissioner said Monday the office was reviewing the first report and will determine whether to order a further investigation.
