An Alberta couple that has been missing since a massive earthquake struck Nepal last week is dead.

The family of Bruce and Kathy Macmillan announced the news in a Facebook post on Saturday.

“It is with our deepest regret and sorrow that we now advise you that our sister Kathy Macmillan (Smith), and our brother Bruce Macmillan have both perished in the Nepalese earthquake,” read a post on the “Find Bruce and Kathy Macmillan” Facebook page.

The couple was hiking in Nepal’s Langtang National Park when the 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the region last Saturday.

Family said the couple was seen hiking in an area that was buried in an avalanche at the village of Chyamki.

The couple was on a trip to mark the 35th anniversary of another visit to Nepal, which took place shortly after they were married.

Earlier this week, Bruce’s sister, Louise Bentley, said they last heard from the couple on April 20, when they called their son to say they were on a bus headed for a seven-day hike. Following their trek across Langtang National Park, they had planned to meet up with their sons in Kathmandu to embark on a family hike.

In the wake of the earthquake, family took to social media in an effort to find the couple.

Bruce and Kathy Macmillan are survived by their two sons, Jay and Fraser. The family says they are planning a future public tribute for Bruce and Kathy.

The quake -- the worst the country has seen in more than 80 years -- killed more than 6,000 and caused widespread destruction.
