Police have found the body of a 37-year-old man who was swept into a river in the flooded Gaspe region of Quebec, but a two-year-old girl is still missing.

Officials said the remains of Mike Gagnon, of Saint-Anne-des-Monts, was found about 500 metres from where he was pulled into the Saint-Anne River.

Gagnon, the two-year-old and a woman had been inside a car near the surging river, when the vehicle was hit by rising waters.

The group reportedly tried to climb onto the roof of the car, but the vehicle then drifted into river.

Only the woman managed to reach safety.

Police in Quebec are warning residents to stay away from flooded and closed roads. The water is not expected to start receding until mid-week.
