This winter's deep freeze is causing water woes throughout much of Western and Central Canada.

As the frost moves deeper into the ground, water mains are breaking under the pressure. Meanwhile, thousands of homes from Calgary to Kenora, Ont. are dealing with frozen pipes.

Here are some of the numbers in communities worst-hit by the latest cold snap:

Calgary:

  • 12: Average number of water main breaks city crews are dealing with daily
  • 20 cm: Depth of ice after a water main break in a southeast neighbourhood that left several cars frozen to the street
  • 30: The number of school buses that were unable to start Monday after temperatures dipped to -40 C over the weekend
  • -9.7 C: Average minimum temperature for March 4
  • -19.5 C: Low temperature on March 4, 2014

Saskatoon:

  • 102: Number of water main breaks this winter
  • 13: Number of water main breaks that occurred over the weekend, including a record-setting 11 that took place over a 26-hour period
  • 20-25: Average number of properties left without water after each water main break
  • 3.8 litres: Water supply the city recommends households should have on hand
  • -14.3 C: Average minimum temperature for March 4
  • -17 C: Low temperature on March 4, 2014

Regina:

  • 52: Average number of water main breaks in a typical year
  • 129: Number of water main breaks this year, so far
  • 2-3: Number of homes that typically experience frozen pipes in January and February
  • 30: Number of homes with frozen pips since the beginning of the year
  • 6 feet: How deep the frost has penetrated into the ground
  • -13.3 C: Average minimum temperature for March 4
  • -16 C: Low temperature on March 4, 2014; -25 C with wind chill

Winnipeg:

  • 616: Number of homes waiting to have pipes thawed
  • 3 weeks: How long it will take city crews to thaw out all frozen pipes
  • 3: Number of thawing machines the city has on hand
  • 10: Number of thawing machines one councillor says the city needs
  • 15 days: How long some residents have been without water

Kenora, Ont.:
