CALGARY -- A former Canadian soldier who has admitted planning an attack on the Calgary office of Veterans Affairs says he is sorry.

Glen Gieschen had a beef with the department over coverage for illnesses he believed were caused by a flu shot.

The 45-year-old former military intelligence officer, whose name was originally banned from publication, pleaded guilty to weapons charges in a Calgary court earlier this month.

In a statement read by his lawyer, Gieschen apologized to all staff of Veterans Affairs Canada for any distress his attack plans caused them or their families.

He says he took responsibility for his "irresponsible" actions by pleading guilty and is prepared accept the consequences.

Gieschen is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 30 at which time remaining charges he faces will likely be withdrawn.
