Police are looking for two men they say broke into a Vancouver home, pointed a gun at a seven-year old girl, and injured her grandfather before making off with money and a rare watch.

The theft happened at approximately 3:30 p.m. on June 17.

Police say two men dressed as construction workers forced their way into a home on Dieppe Drive in East Vancouver. Two children and their grandparents were in the residence at the time.

The homeowner, who identified himself as Andrew, said the men first went upstairs looking for valuables.

"They came downstairs and asked where the money is," he said. "My parents said 'There’s no money, 'and one guy hit my dad over the head with a gun."

According to Andrew, that’s when his seven-year-old daughter stepped in.

"That’s when my daughter got mad," he said. "She yelled and said 'Stop it! Don’t do that!"

The girl went upstairs to her parents' bedroom and returned with a jar of change, which she handed to the intruders.

"The young girl went and turned over the coins and the change that she could find in the home," Vancouver police Sgt. Randy Fincham said.

The men also took other items, including a rare Rolex Yachtmaster II watch from the home. The steel and rose gold watch is valued at approximately $2,500.

Police say they believe the men may have tried to sell the watch, or give it away. They are asking the public to keep an eye out for piece of jewelry, as well as for the two men they say took it.

One of the men is described as a white male, 25 to 45 years old, with a slim build, shaved head, and full sleeve tattoos on both arms. The second man is described as dark-skinned, 20 to 30 years old, with a medium build and a thin beard.

Police are looking into why they were dressed in construction vests at the time, and say they are unsure if the men worked in construction, or were wearing disguises.

Fincham said it is unusual for police to appeal to the public before charges have been laid, but said the unusual case warranted the extra effort to find the men.

"It’s not very often that we have a small child that’s victimized," he said, adding that home invasions rarely target occupied houses.

"This was a heinous robbery, which will have an impact on a seven-year-old child and her family for the rest of their lives."

Anybody with information on the incident is asked to contact the VPD at 604-717-2541 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
