It was a first date gone wrong.

Both parties required a rescue, but not the kind you might expect.

Rescue crews helped Kazuki Toyoda, 24, and his 19-year-old companion find their way out of wilderness surrounding Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver after the pair got lost on Saturday afternoon.

It was about 12:30 a.m. when rescue workers tracked down the missing couple.

The pair had taken the gondola to the top of the mountain in search of a lake.

Jim Loree, manager of the North Shore Rescue Search, told CTV Vancouver that he did not know what lake they were looking for and that the couple was not familiar with the mountain.

"(They were) just really, really unprepared and not knowledgeable of the terrain at all," said Loree. "I don't think that's a good first date at all."

After the affair was over, Toyoda thanked rescue workers who saved him from the nightmare date.

"Thank you so much," said Toyoda. "Nice job."

The couple walked away from the date unscathed.

The incident is part of an unprecedented spike in emergency calls in the area this year. So far, North Shore Rescue has responded to 118 calls, but usually average about 90 to 100 over the course of an entire year.

Last week, a hiker ventured off a trail and injured himself in a fall on the north side of Grouse Mountain. He was later airlifted to safety.
