NEW WATERFORD, N.S. -- Officials are investigating a fire at a senior's complex in Cape Breton that forced the evacuation of elderly residents.

The RCMP were alerted to the fire at the complex on Nicholson Avenue in New Waterford at about 2 a.m.

They say the fire was contained to one apartment unit and was put out quickly.

Twenty-seven seniors were taken to the New Waterford Fire Hall, and no injuries were reported.

Police say the fire doesn't appear to be suspicious in nature.

The fire marshal was going to inspect the building and it wasn't clear when residents could return.
