CALGARY -- A Calgary man has been charged after a dog was beaten and killed with a knife in a targeted attack.

Robert Malcom Nicholson, 34, faces several charges including killing an animal without lawful excuse and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

He has also been charged under the Alberta Animal Protection Act with causing an animal to be in distress.

Police say the dog was found dead and buried last month in the backyard of a Calgary home.

The Calgary Humane Society confirms the dog had injuries consistent with being beaten and the cause of death was a deep cut on the animal's neck.

Police say they believe the dog, a border collie-lab mixed-breed named Chevy, was killed as part of a dispute between two people living at the home.
