A British Columbia teen may have stolen the show at her prom this weekend when she donned a floor-length, potato sack burlap dress to raise money for an orphanage in the Philippines.

Courtney Barich wore her custom creation on Friday to her high school dance in Surrey, B.C. The Grade 12 student had pledged forego wearing her dream red chiffon gown earlier this year after a school trip to the island country in March.

During the eye-opening trip, the teen said she was deeply affected by what she saw. "(The orphanage) was made out of just straight garbage," Barich told CTV Vancouver in April. "So (the orphans) sleep in garbage bags and stuff."

Upon returning from her trip, Barich launched a campaign to raise $10,000 for the St. Martin De Porres Orphanage.

She was ultimately short of her goal, but the teen still opted to wear the burlap gown to her prom.

"Even though I only raised $7,500, I still wore the dress & will continue raising the money until I leave for my trip,” Barich said in a Facebook post on Sunday. She's planning to return to the Philippines in September and will give the money to the orphanage then.

Despite the dress' modest material, however, Barich was still able to look stunning at her prom.

Barich's campaign caught the attention of a local designer, Suman Faulkner, who offered to customize the burlap potato sack.

The itchy material was transformed into a one-shoulder gown that was adorned with pink flower detailing. Barich’s prom date also wore burlap to the dance, donning a vest and bow-tie made of the fabric.
