An Amber Alert in Manitoba has ended after RCMP say a missing eight-year-old girl was found safe in Winnipeg.

RCMP Chief Superintendent Mark Fisher said authorities are “very, very happy” that the child was located after a member of the public spotted her and her mother in a black truck that police say was stolen.

News of the missing girl’s discovery broke rather abruptly during an RCMP update Friday evening.

“I’ve just received information that we’ve found Luisa, and that she’s okay,” Fisher said midway through his comments. “I don’t know that I’ve had a press conference that’s ended this well. That’s fantastic news.”

In a subsequent update, Fisher praised the Amber Alert system for the speedy discovery.

“I think it’s fantastic that we can issue an alert a little more than an hour ago and to have her found safely,” he said.

Police say the child does not live with her mother, who police identified as 43-year-old Colleen Sheryl McIvor. McIvor did not immediately face charges, but police said the case is still in its early stages.

“Our investigation is ongoing in regard to the circumstances as well as any potential charges against her mother,” Fisher said.

Police said the Amber Alert was issued because they determined the girl was at risk of harm, and they were also concerned after receiving reports that the vehicle was spotted near the airport.
