Canadian officials are investigating after an Alberta man died at a resort in Mexico over the weekend.

Mexican digital newspaper Noticaribe News reports that the man died after falling off the edge of a balcony at Cancun’s Great Pernassus resort on Jan. 5.

The reports state that there was an altercation inside the hotel bar and the man was punched in the face before stumbling outside.

A photo of a body covered under a white sheet accompanied the local media report.

CTV News has confirmed the identity of the Canadian as 21-year-old Chris Rogers from St. Albert, Alta.

A spokesperson with Canada’s Foreign Affairs and International Trade department said officials with the Canadian consulate in Mexico are working with local authorities in the investigation.

The spokesperson, citing privacy concerns, would not confirm the victim’s name.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of a Canadian citizen who passed away in Mexico,” said Barbara Harvey in a statement.

A friend of the victim told CTV News that Rogers was entering his last year of studies at the University of Alberta.

When contacted by CTV News, police in Cancun said they did not immediately have details about the case. The general manager of the hotel was not available for comment.
