A boarding-house fire in Montreal has injured five residents, two of them critically, after a propane tank explosion.

The blaze broke out in the Rosemont / La-Petite Patrie neighbourhood, just northeast of downtown Montreal.

Service de Securite Incendie de Montreal (SIM) said firefighters were called to the 50-unit rooming house on Belanger St., Sunday. Police and paramedics were also on scene.

According to paramedics, two severely injured people have burns to about 80 per cent of their bodies but no impact wounds, which are typical in explosions. A firefighter also suffered minor injuries.

Buildings in the neighbourhood were evacuated, as the Montreal fire department tried to get the fire under control. Police have since cordoned off the area as experts examine the building to determine whether it's stable.

There's no evidence of foul play at this time, police said.
