Ford unveiled a new 2015 Shelby GT350 Mustang at the L.A. Auto Show November 17 that promises to be "an all-day track car that's also street-legal."

The Dearborn-based automaker says that when it came to designing this version of the sixth-generation pony car, they focused in particular on balance, ensuring every component and piece of technology would "work in concert."

The highlight of the 2015 GT350 is a 5.2-litre V8 engine with flat-plane crankshaft. The new powerplant is Ford's first-ever production V8 with a flat-plane crank. Flat-plane crank V8s are more commonly found in cars such as Ferraris, or modern NASCAR.

In a flat-plane crankshaft, the connecting rods meet the crank at 180-degree intervals instead of the usual 90 degrees, which tends to change up the firing order and permits better cylinder breathing.

The V8 mill puts down 500-plus horsepower and more than 400 lb.-ft. of torque via a six-speed manual and GT350-unique 11-inch-wide Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires wrapped around 19-inch alloy wheels.

The chassis has been stiffened and lowered, and a lightweight brace that reaches across the shock towers – similar to the one found in the original 1965 Shelby GT350 – is optional.

The 2015 GT350 also features Ford's first-ever use of its new MagneRide dampers, which uses electric current to stiffen iron particles floating in a hydraulic fluid in the dampers. (Other automakers have been using this for a while; Cadillac's Magnetic Ride Control was one of the first applications of the tech.)

The car's bodywork is unique from the cowl forward, and is roughly two inches lower than a stock Mustang's. Fenders and hood are all-aluminum, and feature heat extractors, ducts and vents that work with front fascia spoilers and the rear diffuser to greatly improve aerodynamics.

Special-to-Shelby Recaro seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel highlight an interior that has otherwise been visually subdued to prevent on-track glare or distraction. You can still get it kitted in full leather, though.

Ford did not quote release details or possible pricing on the new Shelby.
