KARACHI, Pakistan -- Pakistan's navy says it has recovered the bodies of at least 30 people who drowned earlier this week when strong winds swept through the country's southern beaches near the city of Karachi.
Navy spokesman Kamran Asif said Friday that rescue crews have recovered 30 bodies so far, after launching a search operation last Wednesday.
An undetermined number of picnickers were swept away Wednesday because of heavy winds on beaches near Karachi.
Asif says a large number of people had gathered on the beaches to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.
Karachi is Pakistan's largest city and thousands of people visit its beaches during holidays.
