The federal government has selected a location in Winnipeg where affordable housing will be built under a national homebuilding program. A portion of the Naawi-Oodena property – the former location of the Kapyong Barracks site – has been chosen under the Build Canada Homes program, a spokesperson for Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada confirmed Thursday. “Build Canada Homes will use a new ‘direct-build’ approach, overseeing and leading construction projects focused on affordable mixed-income communities,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “It will prioritize innovative, factory-built housing, which is expected to accelerate delivery, reduce costs, and improve sustainability.” Naawi-Oodena is a partnership between Treaty One First Nations and the Canada Lands Company. The federal government is planning to spend $13 billion to increase the availability of affordable housing, selecting six sites across Canada to build 4,000 homes. Construction dates for the new houses have not been set. -With files from CTV’s Jon Hendricks
