A security guard was stabbed while trying to break up a fight. Around 10 p.m. on June 30, Winnipeg police were called to a licensed vendor in the 600 block of Westminster Avenue in West Broadway, for an altercation between a youth and another individual. A security guard intervened and broke up the fight, but a youth got involved in a second altercation with another individual a short time later, police said. During the second altercation, police say the youth allegedly took out an edged weapon and stabbed the security guard in the upper body before leaving the area. The guard was sent to hospital in stable condition. Officers from multiple units, including the drone unit and the tactical support team, began searching the area. Police say during the search, the drone operator found an 18-year-old man trying to hide from police and directed officers to his location. The man was taken into custody and a knife was seized, police said. During the investigation, officers identified a 16-year-old male as the suspect in the assault. Shortly before 1:50 a.m., officers went to a home in the 500 block of Wardlaw Avenue in the McMillan neighbourhood and took the youth into custody. The youth is now facing three charges – a count of assault with a weapon and two counts of failure to comply with sentence. He was detained in custody. The 18-year-old man is facing a count of failure to comply with release order. He was released on an appearance notice. No charges have been tested in court.
