Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating an incident where an alleged thief was hit by a vehicle while being chased by Winnipeg police. According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the incident took place on Sunday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue. Officers were working special duty at a business and learned a man had allegedly stolen from a business and ran from the area. The suspect was found outside and a foot pursuit took place. Police said the suspect fled through the parking lot and across Portage Avenue and was hit by a vehicle. He was arrested and taken to hospital for assessment and was medically discharged. He was later released from custody, police said. Under the province’s Police Services Act, the incident is considered a serious injury. The Independent Investigation Unit was notified and is now investigating.
