Manitoba weather: What’s on the way for the weekend

Conditions across most of Manitoba and northwestern Ontario are unusually uniform on Friday: a mix of sun and cloud, a lower chance of showers, the risk of thunderstorms, and seasonal highs in the mid-20s.

In fact, some of the warmest temperatures could turn out to be in the north this afternoon, with Lynn Lake forecast to reach 27 C.

Humidity will continue to grow Friday with humidex values in many regions that will feel in the upper 20s. The humidity will likely lead to fog developing over the next few nights in Manitoba.

Atmospheric instability is also rising. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said a more substantial threat for severe convection appears to be taking shape by late Friday and through the weekend in southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

According to the weather agency, an upper trough of low pressure over the western United States will trigger upper southwesterly flow over the eastern Prairies.

The building combination of all these factors could spell the threat of severe thunderstorms over the next few days.

The already rain-soaked Parkland region should brace for another significant soaking starting Saturday night. ECCC said 30-40 millimetres of heavy convective rainfall is likely, with higher amounts possible.

The weather agency said parts of southern Manitoba will also see heavy rain in convection Saturday night, but it’s too soon to forecast amounts and where it will fall.

In Winnipeg, showers are likely to start Saturday afternoon, then continue the rest of this last weekend of June.

Showers look likely to continue on Monday.

Some sunshine should return by Tuesday, but we still can’t shake the chance of even more showers on the final day of the month.

Canada Day on Wednesday is shaping up to be sunny, with a hot daytime high near 30 C.
