Scorching heat continues on Friday across most of Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. A yellow warning for heat, issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), now includes all of Manitoba, except some of the more northern regions. Daytime highs will once again soar into the low to mid-30s across the province, as far north at Lynn Lake in the northwest. These hot temperatures come after heat records were set Thursday in 24 communities across Manitoba, from Melita in the southwest to Gillam in the northeast. For much of the day, Dauphin was the hottest place in Canada, reaching 37.4 C Thursday afternoon. It was eventually eclipsed by Nipawin, Saskatchewan, where 37.6 C was recorded at its airport. Relief from the heat is not coming soon. The weather agency said an omega blocking pattern is setting up over the eastern Prairies. Basically, high pressure over the region is stuck between two areas of low pressure, creating a heat dome. Under the heat warning for the south, ECCC said daytime highs in the low to mid-30s and overnight lows in the upper teens are expected to continue into early next week. Temperatures will be virtually as warm in warned regions in the north and in northwestern Ontario. These conditions will make for a warm 18th annual Motorcycle Ride for Dad departing Winnipeg Saturday morning.
