The Mynarski council race is crowded with six candidates running, the most of any ward contest in Winnipeg. Ross Eadie is going after a fifth straight council win. He addressed the challengers who want his seat. “They believe they can do a better job.” He then described his own approach. “I’m doing what we can.” The often-outspoken councillor was placed on the mayor’s Executive Policy Committee this term for the first time in his tenure, chairing the water and waste committee. “I’m not posting up every time I’m doing something good,” Eadie said. “I’m out there working hard. If you go down Selkirk Avenue you’ll see that we’ve done, a lot of good physical changes.” Natalie Smith finished second in Mlynarski in 2022. “We saw in the last election his support dropped,” Smith said. The environmental protection charity employee believes a second run here will be the charm. “People are excited about the candidacy, they remember me, they see my signs, and that goes a really long way in these municipal elections.” Nurse and realtor Harold Brazil said he has Aaron McDowell in his corner. McDowell is Eadie’s former city hall assistant who ran against Eadie in 2022. “People want change,” Brazil said. One of Brazil’s motivations for running is personal. “I lost my daughter to addiction three years ago; she had cancer and never got treatment.” Office manager Laurie Kozak is on the St. John’s High School parent council and considers herself an advocate for the area. “I’m very involved, I know what the area needs, and I think that we need someone who is passionate, who wants to make change,” Kozak said. As a former city hall security guard, Ayaz Noor Mohammed got a firsthand glimpse of how things work. He’s the founder of a medical device business that assists with infertility. “There are so many unsolved problems, that I have offerings, with simple solutions,” said Noor Mohammed. Terry Wachniak was the Mynarski councillor in the late 1980s. He questions the amount of money being spent on the Arlington Street Bridge demolition. “Fantastically too much, and council is not aware of it,” Wachniak said. On a future bridge, all six candidates said a replacement is needed.
