Work is underway to bring a brand-new library to Winnipeg’s northwest area. On Tuesday, officials from the City of Winnipeg and the Manitoba government came out to the Garden City Shopping Centre to celebrate the start of construction on the Mike O’Shaughnessy Library. “Today marks a very important step forward for northwest Winnipeg,” said Coun. Devi Sharma (Old Kildonan), at a news conference. “This new library reflects what residents have told us they want and desire in this space – a welcoming, accessible space where people can grow, come together, learn and connect.” The new library will take up 14,450 square feet of the mall’s space, with a design shaped by public feedback. The facility is expected to include public art, program and tutorial rooms, seating and study areas, computer and printer stations, and public washrooms. The design will also feature a garden decor theme that will utilize natural colours and materials. “This new library will help meet the needs of a rapidly growing area, creating more spaces for learning, connection and access to vital service for residents of all ages,” said MLA Mintu Sandhu, the minister of public service delivery. The budget for the project is $4.7 million. The library, which will be the Winnipeg Public Library’s 21st branch, is expected to open early next year.
