After a chilly month of April, the flip of the calendar page to May brings much warmer temperatures to southern Manitoba – for now. Even though spring officially arrived in late March, below normal temperatures persisted for much of April. The coldest daytime high last month in Winnipeg was -2.7 C on April 17. That was especially tough to take after temperatures soared to 16.8 C just two days earlier. On the other hand, the warmest day of the month was on April 22, when temperatures climbed to 25.1 C. Still, unseasonably cool temperatures and strong northerly winds returned over the last few days of the month. But once again, temperatures are on the upswing on the first day of May on Friday. Winnipeg and the southeast will see sunny highs between 12 C and 14 C this afternoon. Temperatures will climb even higher in Brandon and through most of the southwest, between 15 C and 17 C. The sun will shine across the region, too. As an added bonus - winds are considerably lighter across the south on Friday, after cool northerly winds over the last few days. Meanwhile, the sun is also shining over northern Manitoba on Friday. Forecast daytime highs range from -1 C in Churchill to 10 C in Flin Flon and The Pas. Environment and Climate Change Canada said a cold front will sweep across northern regions starting Friday evening. Showers turning to snow are expected. Freezing rain is also possible. Back in Winnipeg, temperatures will rise into the upper teens on Saturday and Sunday in Winnipeg, under sunshine or a mix of sun and cloud.
