If you are in southern Manitoba, keep your eyes on the sky on Tuesday. Potentially severe thunderstorms are very possible across the region, including in Winnipeg, this afternoon, and even more likely tonight. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), hazards include potentially strong tornadoes, golf ball-sized hail or larger, wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h, and very heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding. That doesn’t bode well for several communities in southwestern Manitoba already flooded from severe weather over the weekend and early Monday. The atmospheric set-up expected to trigger the anticipated storms on Tuesday is complicated. An upper trough moving in from the west will encounter hot and humid air coming into southern Manitoba along strengthening southeast winds as a warm front establishes in the region, north of the Trans-Canada Highway, according to the weather agency. Showers, expected to be heavy at times, and thunderstorms are expected across the south by Tuesday evening. Northern Manitoba will be sunny with hot highs in the mid to upper 20s Tuesday, except for the northernmost regions. Showers in the south will spread into central areas on Tuesday night and northern communities on Wednesday. After a hot, humid and sunny day Tuesday, showers or thunderstorms will spread into northwestern Ontario by late Tuesday night.
