An unfounded break-and-enter call led to a seizure of more than a thousand rounds of ammunition and several charges against a man. At 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Winnipeg police were called for a residential break-and-enter in the 400 block of College Avenue in the St. John’s neighbourhood. Officers found a door to the house was left open when they arrived. They entered to clear the home and check the well-being of anyone inside the house, police said. One officer circled the house and when the officer reached the rear entrance, a man hiding on the property shouted at the officer while pointing a hunting rifle towards the officer, the force said. The officer took cover and shortly after, the man was disarmed and taken into custody. The rifle was not fired and the officer was not injured. The hunting rifle and ammunition for it were seized as evidence. During the clearing of the house, police found and seized an additional 1,060 rounds of various ammunition for several firearms – but did not find any other firearms. After investigating, officers determined that the original call for break-and-enter was unfounded. A 60-year-old man is now facing six charges, including two counts of failure to comply with undertaking conditions, firearms-related and assaulting a peace officer with a weapon. The charges have not been tested in court and he was detained in custody.
