The Essex County Library is celebrating a record-setting year in 2025. Library programming reached 99,224 total attendees in 2025, representing a 28 per cent increase over 2024. Library officials say this growth was driven by an expanded slate of programs and the exceptional customer service delivered by front-line library staff across all branches. “What these numbers really represent is the trust our patrons place in their local libraries. Our front-line staff show up every day with creativity, care, and a genuine commitment to the people they serve, and our 2025 statistics are a clear reflection of that work”, said Chief Librarian Adam Craig. Children’s programming Children’s programming emerged as a primary driver of growth in 2025. Attendance at children’s programs increased by more than 46 per cent over 2024, with nearly 23,000 additional children participating. Officials say this surge reinforces the library’s role as a cornerstone of early literacy, family oriented services, and welcoming community spaces for children and caregivers. Drop-in activities Drop-in activities proved especially effective, accounting for approximately 66 per cent of all programming attendance across the county and offering an impactful, family-friendly model that maximizes engagement with minimal barriers to participation. Outreach efforts Outreach efforts also expanded in 2025 in close alignment with the Library’s Strategic Plan. School and community outreach nearly doubled in 2025, including a 300 per cent increase in classroom visits, strengthening connections with students, educators, and community partners throughout Essex County. “Libraries remain one of the most accessible and trusted public services, and these numbers show how deeply Essex County residents continue to rely on and value their library. From a Board perspective, our year end results highlight how our library system continues to evolve alongside the needs of our communities” said Deputy Warden Joe Bachetti, Chair of the Essex County Library Board.
