The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority is monitoring the Thames River as warmer temperatures and rain increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. The authority issued an early flood outlook, saying daytime highs above freezing and up to 35 millimetres of rain could melt existing snow and push more water into the river system. Low-lying areas along the Thames River from Delaware to Thamesville are considered most vulnerable. In Chatham, that can include water covering sections of the riverfront sidewalk during higher river levels. Officials say it’s too early to know how significant the flooding risk will be and will continue monitoring conditions as the rain moves through the region. Stronger flood messages could be issued if conditions worsen.
