Homicide investigators say a shooting in Surrey early Saturday morning does not appear to be connected to either the B.C. gang conflict or the city’s ongoing extortion crisis. Surrey Police Service officers were called to a home on 91 Avenue near 125 Street shortly before 5 a.m., the SPS said in a news release later in the morning. “Upon arrival, members located two men apparently suffering from gunshot wounds,” the release reads. “Unfortunately, one man was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene. One victim was transported to an area hospital.” Police, firefighters and paramedics all responded to the scene and “rendered aid to the victims,” the SPS said. The case has now been turned over to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, which said in an update Saturday afternoon that it believes the shooting was “a targeted incident that occurred inside a residence.” “Investigators have confirmed that the victims and suspect were known to each other,” IHIT said in its statement, adding that it is working with the SPS, forensic investigators and the B.C. Coroners Service on the case. Police are working to understand the circumstances surrounding the shooting, said Sgt. Freda Fong, in the statement. “The presence of gun violence in a residential neighbourhood continues to be of concern for communities and police,” Fong said. ”We are liaising with our policing partners to collect evidence, conduct interviews and advance this investigation.” To that end, investigators are asking anyone with surveillance or dash-cam video from the 12500 block of 91 Avenue that was recorded between 3:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. Saturday to contact them.
