Woman dead, another in critical condition after crash near Mission, B.C.

One woman is dead and another was critically injured in a two-vehicle collision Sunday near Mission, B.C.

Mounties responded to the crash scene at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Sylvester Road at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Investigators say a grey Toyota Tundra pickup was travelling west on the highway when an eastbound Toyota Camry turned left across its path.

Video from a nearby gas station showed the Camry driver “seemingly intended to turn left onto Sylvester Road, but turned too soon” into the oncoming lane, the Mission RCMP said in a news release Monday.

“The Camry did not clear the lane in time and was struck by the Tundra travelling straight through on the highway,” police said.

The driver of the Camry, a 59-year-old Surrey man, was not seriously injured. However, a 56-year-old Surrey woman in the front passenger seat was killed, while a 48-year-old Surrey woman in the rear seat was taken to hospital in critical condition. Police said she is expected to survive.

“A witness indicated that that none of the occupants of the Camry were wearing seatbelts,” the RCMP said. The occupants of the Tundra were not seriously hurt.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service attended the scene to collect evidence. Police say the investigation remains ongoing and there is no indication that impairment was a factor in the crash.
