A B.C. watchdog is investigating why it wasn’t notified that a man was injured during a police incident at a Vancouver apartment building for nearly two months. Police departments are required to notify the Independent Investigations Office any time someone is killed or seriously hurt during an officer-involved incident, regardless of whether there’s an allegation of wrongdoing against law enforcement. The IIO’s latest investigation centres on an incident that unfolded on the morning of July 28 at a residential building on Abbott Street. Officers were there to arrest a man on outstanding warrants, and said the accused jumped from a window on the second floor onto the street. “He suffered injuries and was taken to the hospital for assessment and treatment,” the IIO said in a news release Monday. The Vancouver Police Department notified the IIO on Sept. 25. The reasons for the delay are unclear, but will “form part of the IIO’s investigation,” the watchdog said. The civilian oversight agency asked anyone with information on what happened to call its toll-free witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or fill out the contact form on its website.
